Mufti Imamuddin Saeedi
In Islam, human life and the human soul are given a very high and noble status. Islamic law has made the protection of human life one of its greatest objectives. For this reason, Islam forbids every action that harms human life, mental peace, or spiritual strength. Human life is so sacred that oppression, harm, or even thoughts that lead toward destruction are against the spirit of Islam.
Allah Almighty has placed human beings under the shade of His mercy, kindness, and guidance. For every pain, He has provided a remedy; for every hardship, He has given comfort; and for every darkness, He has lit the lamp of hope. That is why a believer never becomes a victim of despair. No matter how difficult the circumstances may become, the believer’s heart remains connected to the mercy of Allah. He knows that after every hardship comes ease, after every sorrow comes relief, and for every broken heart there is healing and support from Allah.
The life of a believer moves between hope and patience. When a believer faces a trial, he practices patience, and when he receives a blessing from Allah, he expresses gratitude. He firmly believes that Allah is more merciful to His servant than the servant is to himself. Because of this faith, a believer neither falls into despair nor loses courage. Instead, he continues the journey of life with faith, action, and hope, trusting in the promise of Allah.
In today’s world, experts in psychology and sociology also acknowledge that hope strengthens a person’s mental health, social behavior, and sense of purpose. The truth that Islam clearly taught centuries ago is now being explained by modern social sciences through theories and research.
American sociologist James Coleman, in his book Foundations of Social Theory, emphasized that the real strength of society lies in the strength of its relationships. When hope, compassion, and the spirit of helping one another are present in a society, people do not feel worthless or alone. Such a society becomes a social safety net that protects individuals from isolation, despair, and self-destruction. This is in harmony with the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, in which he described the believers in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion as one body: if one part of the body suffers, the whole body feels the pain.
Similarly, the renowned psychologist Albert Bandura introduced the concept of self-efficacy. According to him, a person’s belief in his own ability protects him from helplessness and despair. When a person has hope within him, he does not surrender in the face of difficulties. Rather, he moves forward with effort, courage, and action. Islam teaches the same spirit of positive action. The Prophet ﷺ said that if the Day of Judgment begins while one of you has a sapling in his hand, then if he is able to plant it, he should do so. This hadith teaches us that a believer does not abandon hope and action, even at the very last moment.
French sociologist Emile Durkheim explained the importance of social integration in society. According to him, when a person remains connected to society and recognizes the value of his role, he is protected from alienation and despair. Islam also builds human society on cooperation, unity, and righteousness. The Qur’an commands believers to help one another in righteousness and piety, and not to help one another in sin and aggression. This Qur’anic teaching creates a society where every person feels responsible, valued, and purposeful.
Robert Merton explained in his theory that people’s expectations often shape their reality. If a society creates failure, despair, and uncertainty within individuals, people may actually begin to follow that path. But when a society gives the message of hope, courage, and improvement, it creates a spirit of positive growth within people. The Prophet ﷺ also always taught ease, good news, and a positive outlook. He said: Give glad tidings and do not drive people away; make things easy and do not make them difficult.
Therefore, hope is not merely an emotional feeling. Rather, it is a fundamental means of protecting a person spiritually, mentally, and socially. Hope gives life purpose, brings peace to the heart, and protects society from falling apart. A society in which faith in the mercy of Allah, compassion for one another, and hope for a better future remain alive becomes strong, united, and progressive.
In conclusion, it is important to understand that both Islamic teachings and modern social sciences agree that despair is harmful to both the individual and society, while hope is the light of life. The heart of a believer remains illuminated by the mercy of Allah. Even in hardship, he trusts Allah; even in trials, he continues to act; and even in darkness, he keeps the lamp of hope burning. May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to act upon these teachings. Ameen.
